The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik.
This month's Island Batik Ambassador challenge is Pattern Play - Secondary Pattern Challenge. The whole idea behind this challenge is to create a quilt where, when the blocks are put together, an unexpected pattern emerges. This by far has to be my favorite challenge of all, because it is one of my favorite things to do in design, and fundamental to creating any mystery quilt I run on my website (because it makes it harder to guess the finished design).
Which quilt to use was also an easy choice. I picked one of my newest designs that debuted at Quilt Market in the Island Batik Booth. Solar Flare is a quilt made entirely with their Batik Foundations. If you haven't heard of them they are wonderful. They are fabrics that quilt stores can order as 8 yard bolts (instead of 15) and they be reordered as they are always in stock.
The idea behind this quilt was to use a transition in the warm color range and use contrasting cool colors to balance it out and create that secondary pattern in the background.
