I'm thrilled to be a stop today in the celebration of Christa Watson's new book, Piece and Quilt with Precuts. She is a very talented quilter, and great at writing instructions. My first taste of her instructional style was The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting, which she co-wrote with Angela Walters. I was hooked, and when she asked for participants for this hop I jumped at the chance.
It was really hard to decide which quilt to pick from this book because it is packed full of wonderful designs. Ultimately I decided to go with Twinkling Diamonds, because it was in my top 3 (which were all #1 in my mind), and because it just happened to fall in the same week I was taking over on the @52quilters IG account!
One of the things I loved about this design from the start was that it was larger blocks that really show off your fabric, so my original plan was to use my Tula Pink Anniversary FQ bundle, but I needed background, and neutrals for the center of the diamonds. Somewhere in the course of picking out the diamond centers (my brain was thinking of doing a gradation with solids in the opposite direction as the prints) the teal, yellow, and orange were together, and just like that my original plan unraveled.
Now, using rich orange as a background was way out of my comfort zone I didn't purchase enough to make the size quilt in the book (which I've come to regret), but just enough to make about 8 blocks. Since I now want to make this larger, and need to track down more teals and yellows (thankfully I was able to get more of the orange background), my top isn't quilted. I do know when I quilt it though I will be using Aurifil to quilt it.
One of the things I chose to do in the assembly of this quilt was to play with directional fabrics in the blocks, and loved the result. After assembling the top I ended up with 3 blocks left over so I'm sharing those as well.
Thank you for visiting and reading about my Twinkling Diamonds Quilt. If you haven't already take the time to go visit the other blogs in the hop. You won't regret it! All the links are listed below, along with everyone's IG handle so you can see what they are up to there as well.
